Chocolate Frozen Yogurt

Dark chocolate frozen yogurt is a delicious recipe

This recipe is so easy to make that it almost seems too simple.

The best part? You don’t need heavy cream, condensed milk, or an ice cream machine to make homemade chocolate froyo.

Chocolate frozen yogurt healthy ingredients

For this chocolate recipe, you’ll need plain yogurt, cocoa, salt, sweetener, and vanilla extract.

The cocoa: You can use regular cocoa, Dutch cocoa, hot cocoa, or hot chocolate mix. If you want the most authentic chocolate flavor, I suggest using Dutch cocoa powder.

The yogurt: Any regular or Greek yogurt will work here, even dairy-free yogurts like almond milk or Coconut milk yogurt. Remove the vanilla extract if you want to use vanilla yogurt in this recipe. Try blueberry or strawberry yogurt for a different twist.

Sweetener: Use the sweetener you prefer. All the above work, including regular sugar, coconut or date sugar, maple syrup, honey, and agave. You can use erythritol and xylitol to lower the calories in frozen yogurt or make it sugar-free.

Optional Ingredients: Add a banana, peanut butter, Nutella, or plain protein powder to the mix.

Make the best chocolate frozen Yogurt

Mix or blend the yogurt with cocoa powder and sweetener in a large bowl or blender.

Add optional peanut butter or almond and banana butter if you use them.

Once evenly mixed, you can transfer the mixture to a large airtight container or a frozen ice cream machine.

The ice cream maker produces a creamier texture. I have tried both methods, and both are delicious. Below is a blender recipe.

The yogurt can be stirred in the container, or the machine can be churned according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Add about a third of a cup of mini-chocolate chips if you like.

You can eat it immediately as chocolate soft-serve or freeze the frozen yogurt for up to one hour for a firm texture.

Place the chocolate yogurt bowl in the freezer if you are not using an ice cream maker. Stir the contents of the bowl every 30 minutes for two to three hours.

You can store leftover froyo in an airtight container for up to one month. Let it thaw for 15 to 30 minutes before eating.

I own a Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker. KitchenAid and other brands are also excellent choices. You can make this recipe even if you don’t own an ice cream machine.

Blend it up

Instead of using the methods above, you can use a high-speed blender like a Blendtec or Vitamix to make this recipe.

Pour the chocolate-yogurt mixture into an an ice cube tray or a shallow container. Freeze until solid.

Blend the chocolate ice with the tamper until the texture is smooth and soft.

This method will only work with a blender strong enough to blend and pulverize frozen fruits and ice cubes.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups plain yogurt

Half a cup of Dutch or regular cocoa Powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

Sweetener of Choice: 1/2 cup

2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Optional 1/3 cup almond or peanut butter

Add-ins such as chopped nuts, chocolate chips, or mashed banana are optional.

Instructions

Blend everything in a large mixing bowl. Transfer into an ice cream machine or large, airtight containers that have been chilled. When using an ice cream machine, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and serve. Place the container in the freezer if you are using it instead. Stir it every 30 minutes for two to three hours until the yogurt is creamy and chilled. The creamiest homemade chocolate frozen yogurt will be the day you make it because it is solid when it freezes. Thaw any leftovers for about 15 minutes before serving.
